Audacity Book Club: September Read
By Nic Daniels
Welcome back, audacious readers!
Last month, we started year two with the frustrating but beautifully executed All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. This month, we’re winding down emotionally and picking up the action with Spy x Family, a manga by Tatsuya Endo.
Codename: Twilight is a master at disguise and espionage, infiltrating the most dangerous of situations seamlessly. With two countries on the edge of war, he’s given the case of a lifetime, in which he must gain access to the enemy’s national party leader, Donovan Desmond. But the leader is notoriously known as a recluse, only showing up for events at the elite private school his children attend. This brings the ultimate challenge for the lone spy: getting a wife and child.
Taking on the identity of Loid Forger, Twilight is quick to find people to fill the roles but not all is as it seems among Twilight’s choices. Anya, the orphan he adopted, turns out to be a telepath, and Yor, his mild-mannered wife, is a office worker by day and assassin by night. Between missions and private school interviews, each does their best to keep their secrets and stop the war by being the family they never had.
In a surprisingly heartwarming manga, Spy x Family is a fun take on chosen family. This book is available wherever books and comics are sold as well as your local library. You can also watch the Spy x Family anime on Hulu, episodes 1-4 covering the storyline of volume 1. I hope you enjoy, and I will see you at the end of the month for the full review.
Until then, don’t forget to read audaciously!
