Audacity Book Club: September Read
By Nic Daniels
Hello, Audacity Book Club!
Welcome back and happy September. I hope you’re getting ready for fall and a new book. Last month, we reflected on our failures in hopes to push ourselves in the future. This month, however, we’re going to have some fun. Get your astronaut suits ready because September’s book is The Disasters by M.K. England.
This story takes place in the year 2194 (happy 200th birthday, future me) where space colonization is the new norm for humans, having established multiple colonies across the universe. Our main character, Nax Hall, is a hotshot pilot who dreamed of flying through space as a future colony officer, only to flunk out his first day of Ellis Station Academy and ruin his dreams in an instant. He’s joined by three other ex-hopefuls: Rion, the smooth-talking combat and politics expert; Zee, the no-nonsense, ass-kicking medic; and Case, the anxious engineering genius.
However, on their way home to Earth, they find themselves in the middle of a terrorist attack at the very academy they’re rejected from. Even worse, with communication signals sabotaged, they’re not only ones who know the truth and are being framed for the crime. With nothing to lose, the group heads to Earth’s off-planet colonies for help while being pursued by every cop in the galaxy. Their only hope is to fight with everything they have left: a broken ship, brilliant minds, a few new friends, and the truth.
The Disasters is a non-stop space adventure that takes you from Earth to new planetary cities and beyond that’ll constantly make you wonder what’s next. You can find it wherever books are sold as well as your local library. I’ll be back with my full review on September 27th.
I hope you enjoy, and don’t forget to read audaciously!
