Audacity Book Club: October Read
By Nic Daniels
Welcome back, audacious readers!
We’re going right from the start of school to the real start of spooky season so be wary of the shadows, dear readers. Last month, we explored the chaotic life of an instant family with Spy x Family by Tatsuya Endo. This week we’re headed to Nigeria with the thriller, My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
Korede would do anything for her younger, beautiful, and possibly psychopathic sister, Ayoola, including disposing of the body of her dead boyfriend—except this isn’t her first time doing so. In fact, it’s her third time, but Korede does not question her sister’s reasoning for the gruesome act, already knowing that her sister attracts violent men. Instead, she remains practical, using her expertise as a nurse and knowledge of cleaning to find ways to get rid of the bodies, a thankless endeavor. Still, Korede feels it can’t be helped; Ayoola was only protecting herself. There’s nothing wrong with that.
That is, until, the handsome doctor Korede works and is in love with, Tade, asks her for Ayoola’s number. Pining and suspicious, she keeps a close eye on the pair. Unlike Ayoola’s previous boyfriends, Tade is kind, thoughtful, and successful, a perfect match for the family’s favored child. Soon, she can’t help but wonder what her sister is truly capable of and if there’s more to the previous murders than she believed.
Dark and thrilling, My Sister, the Serial Killer asks us how far we’ll go for family and if we truly known them as well as we think we do. This book is available wherever books are sold as well as your local library. I hope you enjoy and stay tuned for the full review at the end of the month.
Until then, don’t forget to read audaciously!
