Audacity Book Club: January Read
By Celeste Daniels
Hello, audacious readers!
We ended the year on a relaxing note but now we are hitting the ground running in 2025. Last month, we explored love, joy, and a higher power with the poetry volume, I Heard God Laughing by Hafiz (translated by Daniel Ladinsky). This month, we’re headed to the high seas in The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty.
Amina al-Sirafi was once one of the most feared pirates to sail the Indian Ocean. After surviving backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, an actual demon, and serval husbands, she was sure it was time to ready to retire to raise her daughter and reunite with her family. Yet, thoughts of her legendary and scandalous career linger as the years go by in a small town away from it.
When a wealthy noblewoman offers her a chance to get back in the game, Amina cannot refuse. While it’s a noble mission of retrieving her former comrade’s kidnapped daughter, the large sum offered for completing the job doesn’t hurt either. Amina dives headfirst into one last adventure with her crew but the father she goes, the bigger the risks.
Thrilling and high flying, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is an historical fantasy that leaves the readers with one question: How far will you go for one more chance at glory?
This book is available wherever books are sold and as well as at your local library or library app. I hope you guys enjoy it! I’ll see you in February for the full review. Until then, don’t forget to read audaciously!
