Audacity Book Club: January Read
By Nic Daniels
Welcome back, audacious readers!
I hope you’re ready to dive into 2023, but for those a little less excited for the start of the year, don’t worry. We’re gonna start off easy. Last month, we learned the art of power and stealing it back with Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li. This month, we’re diving into the shenanigans with the web comic turned graphic novel, Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur.
Missing the bus to school should have been a small mistake for twelve-year-old twin witches (go, twitches), Dani and Dorian. However, life has other plans for them when a mishap with a well-known prisoner gets them marked as criminals by their own kind. As they look for a safe place to go, Dani and Dorian aren’t sure who to trust. However, luck turns in their favor when they find a mentor in warlock, Master Pendragon. They also run into local troublemaker, Nico, who’s always ready to make a quick buck, and Monica, a princess determined to learn magic.
Despite everyone’s different backgrounds and motivations, the group will do all they can to clear Dani and Dorian’s names. But all is not as it seems in the kingdom and as a prophecy loom overhead, the twins start to wonder whether they’re the villains or heroes of the story.
Full of hijinks and adventure, Hooky is a bright, fantasy story about destiny and all the ways to fulfill it. This graphic novel is available wherever all books are sold, comic shops, and your local library. Can’t wait to join you all in the IG Live at the end of the month along with the first review of 2023.
Until then, don’t forget to read audaciously!
