Audacity Book Club: Spring Break

Audacity Book Club: Spring Break

By Nic Daniels

Hi, audacious readers!

I hope your spring is blooming beautifully. It’s a perfect time to embrace growth in all ways but also to take a well-deserved break. As I catch up on book club tasks, there will be no designated book or IG Live for the this month. Instead, I’m giving a few suggestions for the month.

With this list you'll notice these books have a similar theme of war. There’s a lot of conflict currently going on in the world and this my small reminder that war for the sake of war (colonizing, conquering – anything outside of direct protection of people and cultures) is not helpful for anyone. If you’re anti-war, these books are for you. If you’re pro-war, these books are for you. If you’re neutral or unsure, these books are for you.

  • She Who Became the Sun by Shelly Parker-Chan – Saying it’s a historically accurate version of Mulan doesn’t do it justice. It’s a story about survival and corruption of glory.

  • Coming of the Storm by W. Michael Gear & Kathleen O’Neal Gear – A historical novel about the Spanish conquering Florida from an Indigenous perspective.

  • An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir – The first book in a series about rebels, traitors, and how no one really won the war, not even the winners.

  • A Lovely War by Julie Berry – The Greek Gods tell the story of World War I and four humans who are doing their best while the world around them falls apart.

  • Fallen Angels & Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers – The Vietnam War and the Iraq War from the perspective of young, black soldiers discovering the truth about war.

  • Anything you like by any author you like – As always, take this time to read whatever you want. However, I encourage you to challenge yourself this month and pick up something from a different perspective than yours. While books can be great escapes, they can also be great eye-openers.

Hope you guys enjoy spring break! I’ll be back in May, ready to diversify your shelves with some hot picks all summer long.

Until then, don’t forget to read audaciously!
