Audacity Book Club: October Read
Hello, Audacity Book Club and welcome to Spooky Season!
Last month, we explored the universe with The Disasters by M.K. England. However, this month, we’re bringing you back down to Earth. You didn’t think I would let autumn go by without a read that made you look over your shoulder twice, did you? Of course not! So, get your warm drink of choice, a cozy blanket, and settle in for October’s book of the month, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
*Trigger Warning: Around page 70, this book contains allusions of sexual assault. Please protect yourself and skip these pages if needed.
In 1950’s Mexico, Noemi Taboada is a flighty, glamorous, and witty debutant with dreams of enrolling in the National University of Mexico. However, her plans of parties and late nights change when she receives a chilling letter from her recently married cousin. Noemi is sent to the countryside to save her from the High Place, a chilling, isolated mansion owned by her cousin’s English husband and family.
Drawn into this dark world, Noemi starts having strange nightmares that hint at the darkness that shrouds the mansion while navigating her cousin’s menacing and alluring in-laws during the daytime. Soon, she finds her back against the wall and questions about her sanity. The longer she stays, the more Noemi wonders if she can save her cousin—or herself.
A story that fits the name, Mexican Gothic, is a dark, twisted tale that draws you into a treacherous world filled with secrets and chilling lore. You can find this book from local bookstores and libraries, now available in paperback!
I hope you enjoy this book, and I’ll see you around Hallow’s Eve for the full review.
